SADC in coordination with the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Houlton realized the opportunity that was presenting itself with the total solar eclipse passing over Houlton on April 8, 2024. Starting to plan and research past total solar eclipse events almost four years in advance, the group created an Attraction Committee dedicated to the planning, fundraising and coordination of a 4-day festival celebration.
Our goal was not only a capital injection in the local economy for this once in a generation opportunity but to also put the region on the map and the area’s name at the forefront of people’s minds. The long-term goal being to show why Southern Aroostook is not only a wonderful place to visit on a repeat basis but to also consider for future business development or relocation.
The results of those years of planning are now available in the Maine Office of Tourism’s Eclipse Impact Report. Aroostook County enjoyed a 99% spending lift compared to the month prior and a 27% change in visitation.
